Interior design for MeluXina

Square areas in blue and red form an X that comes from the MeluXina logo.

Perception and orientation through unknown spaces must be communicated simply and clearly.

MeluXina is a high-performance computer with extensive computing power. In its future role it will significantly support research and business in Luxembourg. MeluXina is part of the European initiative EuroHPC and is already listed among the first 50 of the TOP500 supercomputers worldwide. June 2021 marked the inauguration of Luxembourg’s first high-performance computer which was launched by the Minister of State and the Minister of the Economy in a major event.

For the event and for future visits, a corridor in the LuxConnect Data Center Bissen was to be designed with an additional visitor room reproducing the look and feel of the supercomputer. In order to give visitors an understanding of the structure of the high-performance computer, a technical diagram with detailed information was required.

The challenge was to design the corridor with the various rooms in an unobtrusive yet purposeful way, as further server rooms and offices are partly used by LuxConnect customers.

Information and the design give first impressions of the brand MeluXina and the product.

Before seeing the high-performance computer, the visitor is guided through a corridor containing background information about the LuxProvide company, the MeluXina brand and the sponsors.

The information about LuxProvide and MeluXina introduces the start of the room design. After the presentation of the project’s significant supporters, visitors get a precise impression of the performance power that the supercomputer offers for research and business. With 18 petaflops, translated into numbers as 18 quadrillion operations per second, Luxembourg has one of the most powerful high-performance computers in Europe. This number serves as a wow effect for the visitor and is complemented by important buzzwords to stimulate his or her imagination of this performance.

After the presentation of MeluXina, people can read through additional information about the Luxembourg legend of Melusine, which contributed significantly to the creation of the brand and clearly shows the connection between the city of Luxembourg and MeluXina.

»We needed a room concept for the supercomputer MeluXina at short notice, which had to be created and attached. In this project, too, phase grün was able to convince us with creativity and, above all, compliance with the extremely short deadline.«
– Roger Lampach, CEO, LuxProvide –

Special features can serve as eye-catchers and send messages to visitors.

The walls of the corridor and the visitors’ room, which feature important information about the MeluXina project, have a total length of approx. 120 m.

The design of MeluXina, which already existed, was used to underline its recognition value. Above all, the circles and squares run strikingly like soap bubbles through the premises and lead to the supercomputer. The design starts with the person responsible for the project. The geometric shapes were combined with the colours from LuxProvide’s corporate design to separate the offices from the supercomputer while still maintaining the connection between the company and the product.

The giant “X” from the logo marks the entrance to the visitors’ room with the high-performance computer on the wall and floor. In the visitors’ room, the technical infographics explain everything about MeluXina; in parallel, you can watch the computer live.

The top priority was to meet the deadline of the project, as the presentation of the product was partly dependent on this. Nevertheless, the focus was always on the quality of the concept and design, which was achieved through constant exchange with the client and transparent communication.
